Destination: Mediterranean Age: 26-35
Travelled with my husband, 3 year old son and my parents. This is my second cruise. We cruised four years ago with Royal Caribbean (Splendor) and it was just splendor the food and the ship. But this trip with Carnival (Splendor) was not Splendor for us.
1) SHIP: The Decor for us was not a WOW. To busy looking and yes too Pink. But the colour Pink was not the problem I think they did not think things through and did not know how to put everything together.

2) The ship not spotless everywhere. I don't know if anyone else noticed but the cleaning crew needed to pay attention also to the dusting in the cabin and shelves. Also there was dust and dirt near the windows at the seating area at the Lido and Buffet and outside at the back of Deck 9 where you can also sit near windows where it was dusty and dirty. But the rest of the Ship was very clean (main hall ways and dinning room). We tried to take pictures from our window cabin but the outside window was never clean. (Could not get a clear picture). I told info. desk but was never cleaned.

3) FOOD: I think they were more into the presentation of the food and not the quality. I am Italian and the Italian sauce and any type of Italian food they made was just O.K. The food was a big dissipointment to me and my husband. The food was not always hot and tasted to Americanized. Not to happy with the mexican and french food. It was just O.K. I wish they were more concerned with the taste of all the food and not only the presentation. I must say the fruit was very good.

4) SERVICE: The room stewards were very nice. We were at the early seating and our dining room wait staff were great. We loved them. But then agian the food not so. We loved when the waitstaff would sing and dance. I think that was the best entertainment they had. But everyone who worked on the ship were great people. Always saying hi and taking the time to talk to our 3 year old son.

Overall the one thing that I DID NOT like the most about the ship was the bathrooms all over the ship were not hands free. There were two very heavy doors to open before you get in the washroom and they were small and the soap was not hands free. Sorry but this was not to my liking. This is just what I think. I hope that other new Carnival Ship being built will not be the same. I think taste and quality of food on any ship and cleaness of the ship should be there #1 concern and for me (personally) it was not. Like I said it was just O.K.

FOR THE PORTS OF CALL: Italy, Barcelona and Croatia. We could not dock at France b/c of high winds. We took shuttles most of the time and it was great. We took a few tours with Carnival which was also nice but I think they charge to much!!

Will I travel with Carnival agian?? NO. But we still had a very nice family vacation. Ciao.

My wife and I took the same cruise and I agree with the reviewer on most points, however, we found the cleanliness of the ship and our stateroom to be very good and our steward was very friendly and helpful. The food quality did vary somewhat, however, the dining room wait staff were marvellous. We too, enjoyed the singing and dancing, although it did seem a bit contrived. The overall decor of the ship was too kitschy for our taste-fine if you like the over the top Vegas look. That really seemed to be the atmosphere on the cruise. This cruise would appeal to those who go to LV for 3-4 day gambling getaways to see Celine Dion and Cirque de Soleil. The Caribbean "Jimmy Buffet-style" music on the Lido deck seemed out of place on a Meditteranean cruise, however, many passengers seemed to enjoy it along with the hairy chest contest and obligatory Village People YMCA singalong. We were surprised that smoking was allowed in so many areas, so we avoided the casino and lounges where this was the case. I'm afraid we were sucked in by the art auction and now have some buyers' remorse about a couple of purchases (fortunately quite modest but still within the "what was I thinking" category). Caveat emptor. This was our first cruise and I doubt that we will do another, even though the ports of call were interesting (loved Dubrovnik and Barcelona. Taormina, Sicily was also a pleasant surprise. Also took a nice excursion the the Cinque Terre while docked at Livorno). We too were disappointed that Cannes was scrubbed due to high seas. Overall, just not our style of travel (we are in our late 50s, are fit and prefer to do our own thing). We decided to book because other family members were going and we had been planning a European vacation anyway. I must admit, it was nice not to have to wrestle suitcases up and down train platforms for 12 days and as mentioned, the staff we encountered were great. I don't think I've ever seen people who work any harder than these fine folks from all over the globe. Carnival seems to fill a market niche, just not ours. Their charges for extras, especially drinks, seemed high and they are very aggressive merchandisers to a captive audience i.e. for shore excursions. You should also stay away from the gift shop or you could inflate the cost of your vacation significantly. Fortunately, we were able to bracket our cruise with some independent time in Rome, Assisi and Milan, so overall we enjoyed our vacation although we likely won't choose Carnival or any other cruise line for future travels.

Too americanized? Carnival is about as "all-american" as it gets! The shore excursions were too expensive? You can do the ports on your own covering the same ground for a fraction of the cost! As an Italian cruising in Europe I'm astounded that you did not pick Costa or MSC to cruise with, particularly the latter, who are well known for their attention to cleanliness. Also, the issues brought up regarding the cuisine would not have been a problem either since both companies are Italian based.
