Value for money cruise

Cruise Ship: Carnival Splendor Sailed: August, 2008
Destination: Baltic Age: 46-55
As this was our first ever cruise we had no expectations of what a pretty amazing experience we had. Just turning up at Dover and seeing the size of Splendor took our breath away. The boarding process could have been quicker but once at the front of the crew we only took seconds to fill in the necessary forms and get our sail and save cards. Our bags had arrived at our cabin before we did and after unpacking decided to explore the ship. As everyone else has stated the pink decor took a bit of getting used to and the layout a bit confusing at first but there are maps everywhere so not too bad.
We were allocated the Black Pearl restaurant on the first sitting and we could not have been looked after better, all our food was piping hot and of excellent quality.
By the time we got back to our cabin the stewards had made the fabled towel animals which put a smile on our faces, these guys are amazing and deserve every congratulation on the way they looked after us especially our steward Juan.
The entertainment onboard was a little biased towards the American market but this is only to be expected as they seemed to make up the majority of the passengers but was still enjoyable.
Shore excursions we had booked on-line about 12 months before departure so we had saved ourselves the increases due to the £ to $ exchange rate worsening. All of our excursions were very well organised with knowledgeable guides.
Our 2 day tour of St Petersburg we had booked through another company and this was the jewel in the crown of our cruise
with a guide who was a professor of art so her knowledge especially in the Hermitage was second to none.
All in all as both my partner and I were facing this holiday with some trepidation we both have to say we would cruise again as long as we could have the same weather and sea conditions. We never saw an angry sea all the time we were away.
I can only recommend that everyone should give it a go at some time and hopefully enjoy their cruise as much as we did.
Quality of Food5
We asked to be on a table for two as this was our first cruise and this may be why we were looked after so well .We ate in the Black Pearl and all our food was delivered swiftly and was always piping hot. Both Elpedio and Stanios were very efficient and friendly.
Entertainment4
All the shows were enjoyable as we have to remember that the same people have to perform several times on the cruise.
Shore Excursions5
All our shore excursions were very well organised with knowledgeable guides St Petersburg was amazing and could have stayed for a week.
Staff5
Every member of staff we encountered was extremely helpful and friendly
Children's Facilitiesn/a
Onboard Activities4
As long as you are willing to take part there was something to keep you busy nearly all hours of the day.
Cabins5
Our cabin was spacious and well appointed, balcony did not get as much use as we would hsve liked but you cant have everything. The cabin stewards were amazing with how well they looked after us.

Question by Turner, St Albans (30 Sep 08 17:22) about this REVIEW.
Was it easy to get your table for two? This is what has been putting us off cruising on ships with " set time" meals. We are not unsociable but like to eat on our own.

Answer by Glanfield, Portsmouth (04 Oct 08 12:51) to a QUESTION by Turner (30 Sep 08 17:22)
We had booked 18 months in advance of sailing and had requested a table for two. We were told that there were a limited number of this type of table and the cruise line could not promise we would be allocated one. Once on board we had a chat with our Maitre'd who was excellent and found us a table straight away with no problems. The plus side of our table was that we didnt have to wait for other diners and we seemed to be one of the first tables to be served and our food was always piping hot. What you must remember is there are always alternative dining options from the more formal although our cruise with Carnival the dress options on board was excellent asI personally have to wear a shirt and tie at work and wanted to get away from this regime. The two formal evenings on board we just didnt bother to go to the dining room and ate elsewhere on the ship as there were plenty of options.

Most ships have a limited number of tables for two and they are often filled on a first come first served basis ie the earlier you book the better your chances of securing one however this is never guaranteed. Be warned also that a table for two on some ships can mean a row of small tables seperated by just a few inches so you could have people very close on both sides. There are nearly always alternative dining locations anyway so you shouldn't be too worried about finding some privacy while eating but remember you are literally all in the same boat and cruises by their very nature are somewhat more social than you may be used to.
