We took our first cruising holiday on the Carnival Splendor to the Baltics with our two children aged 4 & 6. We had a fantastic time. The ship was amazing in decor and was so large it did not feel that we were on holiday with 3000 other people (200 of them being children). The staff were very friendly and always cleaning the ship.

We booked an inside cabin with the pull down beds and it wasn't too cramped, though I wouldn't want to share it with teenagers! We would however, book a room with a window next time as everytime we woke up we did not know whether it was day or night and it would be nice to occasionally sit in your cabin just to get away from everything. The rooms were immaculate, being cleaned twice a day and the children loved the daily 'towel animal' and chocolates. The cabin steward was very helpful, and made a great effort with the children.

We had an early sitting at the golden pearl restaurant with two fantastic waiters who remembered the children's names & their food requirements (children's menu available). Food was great, and the dancing waiters with the singing maitre'd was good entertainment at the end of the meal. We tended to have breakfast in the self service lido restaurants with a good range of cold & cooked food to suit everyone's taste. Breakfast was also nice in the waiter service restaurant. We never had a problem finding a table even on the busier sea days.

Entertainment in the evenings was good, though we found it a problem to go as a family or as a couple, as the children were so tired from a) the clock changes b) the trips ashore and c) the children's club - Camp Carnival, so one of us had to babysit. In future we would pick a ship that has an in-cabin listening service rather than more entertainment until 3am in the kids club. Saying that the children loved Camp Carnival - we could sign them in and out at anytime and activities changed every 30 mins. We hardly saw the children!

My husband enjoyed the films on the big screen in the evening. There was a lot of entertainment to choose from, though we found all the things we would like to do all happened at the same time, so we missed quite a few things.

We only took tours in St Petersburg (left the children in kids club), partly due to the costs and we knew the children wouldn't enjoy guided tours. We went ashore on our own; being able to walk into Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Warnemunde & Tallinn from the ship; and catch shuttle buses arranged by Carnival into the Helsinki for a small cost. The guided tours in St Petershof and the city panoramic were a good way to get a snapshot of Russia. The guides, university students, were very knowledgeable about their city and the history of the Tsars and the wars. We would like to go back to the city on our own and see more.

We definately plan to take another cruise, not sure where - though it would be nice to see some sun, and travel from the UK without the hassle of airports, choose a cabin with a window and an in-cabin babysitting service. We would go on the Splendor again if we could fulfil the above requirements!
Quality of Food5
Gold Pearl restaurant and the Lido restaurants
Entertainment5
The onboard dancers and singers were great in 'Vroom' and 'Fiesta Latina'. The illusionist/magician was fantastic.
Shore Excursions5
Peterhof Palace and Gardens, and the Panoramic Coach Tour of St Petersburg. The other ports can be done on your own.
Staff5
John Heald, the Cruise Director was very entertaining. The waiter Imade and his assistant in the Gold Pearl Restaurant.
Children's Facilities5
The Camp Carnival was open from approx 9am to 3am (a charge between 10pm & 3am). Good variety of activities in both 2-5 and 6-8 groups. I think it would be nice for the 4-5 year olds to be separated from the younger children for activites as my daughter found some of the activites a bit young.
Onboard Activities4
Line dancing, casino, trivia quizes, movies, theatre shows, demonstrations - can you fit it all in?
Cabins5
Cabins were larger than expected. Good sized bathroom. All very clean.
Overall Rating5

We also went on the Carnival Splendor to the Baltic and, although we enjoyed the holiday, the Carnival ship wasn't a match for the Cunard line.Elegance and subtlety are things Carnival don't seem to understand, although we're aware that this is classed as a fun ship. It was like a cross between Butlins and Las Vegas, at sea. We thought the cruise director was pretty awful--'jokes' that bordered on offensive (and we do NOT take offence easily, believe me), treating the passengers like idiots (but then.....). Although the food was generally good and plentiful, the restaurant, and at times the self-service,did not cater well for vegetarians. A mixed salad seemed totally beyond them! Entertainment very average, and difficult to hear the film shown on the big screen due to poor acoustics and the bar being in the same area. But the housekeeping and waiting staff were excellent, we were very comfortable in our outside cabin, and the towelling animals were brilliant.
