Destination: Baltic Age: 36-45
We went on the Carnival Splendor on a 12 night cruise of the Baltic from Dover and this was the second cruise of the ships inaugeral season and the ship was only one month old. The cruise destinations were (in order) Copenhagen - Denmark, Warnemunde/Rostock - Germany, Helsinki - Finland, St Petersbug - Russia (2 days), Tallin - Estonia and Amsterdam - Netherlands. If you have not done the Baltic, then I would highly recommend this itinary. All of the ports of call were interesting and worth getting off the ship for. At certain ports such as Tallin, Rostock and Amsterdam, doing the tours was purely optional as you can wander around the towns effortlessly without the need to spend on expensive tours. We found Carnival's tours extremely expensive and overrated. Regarding the ship itself, be prepared for a very 'bright' decor which you cannot avoid as it is so different to P & O ships for instance, which are much more conservative. You do actually get used to the decor after a while and once you have done this, the cruise ship is actually very well proportioned and easy to navigate around, despite it's 113,000 gross tonnes. Meals were just above average and the Pinncale Restaurant is well worth paying the $15 supplement per person as the meal we had in there was quite excellent. The crew/cabin staff were helpful and considerate. Carnival does definitely do everything to maximise it's revenue earned per customer and you need to become immune to the constant selling of tours, paintings, portraits, shop sales etc. as most of it is quite frankly not particularly good value. On this cruise you will become very familiar with the voice of your cruise director John Heald as he is everywhere! He will also introuce you to his fictitious charactoe Dick Little who will have been a pre-sellected passenger who he will make you believe has this silly name. There will be various shows where 'Dick' is again selected and I must admit that the shows were quite funny, until I found out that they were staged, which fortunately was on the day we disembarked the ship. In summary, the ports of call are highly recommended, the ship is large, well arranged, the cabins are nicely apointed (we did have a suite though), the food is average (just below P & O by my reckoning) and the overall experience was above average and good value (partly due to the weak dollar). Would I sail with Carnival again or prefer P & O, well probably P & O as I like a british ships with mainly british people, but we all have our own preferences!
Quality of Food2
Ok, if you like quantity over quality
Entertainment4
John Heald bedtime story/talent show
Shore Excursions4
Helsinki - Finland - visit to a typical Finish house in the countryside - very enjoyable and a change from the usual city tours!
Staff5
Zhasmina from Bulgaria- senior restaurant staff memeber who waited on our table - a lovely person and a pleasure to be served by!
Children's Facilities1
Circle C - just video games and not much else for the 12-14 age group
Onboard Activities3
Yes, although sometimes you just want to relax!
Cabins4
Very much so. We paid a premium to have a grade 11 suite with large balcony, whirlpool bath and dressing area midships. Highly recommended and you wouldn't get this much cabin on other similar cruise lines for this money

You will certainly enjoy the cruise as the itinary is one of the best I have experienced in the 6 cruises we have been on. I would certainly recommend that you do tours in St Petersburg if you don't have a visa (or you can arrange a private tour and will be allowed through imigration, Carnival of course don't tell you this! Look out for the old Russian naval base as you leave St Peterburg (about 1-2 hours out of port). It has old submarines and warships and is certainly a remnent of the cold war and quite a site and the cruise ship will pass by very close to this. Also the suspension bridge you pass under which bridges Denmark and Sweden was a great experience. Unfortunately they won't publicise either of these on the loud speaker, so best to ask one of the crew. If you want to tour the cities of Amsterdam or Tallin, you don't need to pay the hugely inflated prices that Carnival charge and particularly as you are docked close to the centre of each of these cities and can very easily walk round them. We had a hairdryer, but not sure if this was standard or because we upgraded to a suite where we had a separate dressing area. Try looking at the Carnival website as it provide some useful information regarding some of the facilities. There are 240 volt plug sockets for instance which is obviously helpful if you are English. Have a great cruise and enjoy the shows, including "Dick Little", assuming John Heald is still doing this routine. Kind Regards Tony ps. one more thing and that is that it is definitely worth paying the $30 extra per person to go to the Pinnacle Steak House (assuming you like steak of course!) as the service and food quality was outstanding and definitely worth the supplement.

Think this is a fair and informative review. We had a spa balcony room on this cruise which included use of the wet spa rooms - good after walking round the ports all day. Carnival don't mention the currencies that you need to take with you for the various ports so I bought a certain amount for every port of call, including Russian money. This was in fact a large waste of my time as they all took euros anyway! Our younger son didn't use Camp Carnival - he said there wasn't much to do for 11 year olds (don't know whether the other 11 year olds would agree with him on this or not), but our eldest son (17) was very happy with the O2 club and made quite a few friends on the trip. I was worried about our younger son having sea sickness before we went but even on the one roughish day we had he was fine and I didn't hear of anyone else being sick either so I needn't have bought all those tablets either. Agree with you on the decor - it was really in your face (and not what we have in our lounge!) but it didn't spoil our enjoyment of a very comfortable cruise with an excellent itinerary.
